PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scarf joint of different metal materials which is highly reliable and keeps joint strength, by clarifying conditions to reduce stress concentration at the ends of bonded surfaces of the scarf joint, and by issuing a guideline for designing the joint, for combinations of various different metal materials which form intermetallic compound layers in their bonded surfaces, and also to provide a method of designing the joint. SOLUTION: Free edges 3 of both ends A and B of the bonded surfaces, and the bonded surfaces 4, in the scarf joint of different metal materials, are made linear. A scarf angleθ<SB>1</SB>at the point where these lines are crossed is found by means of stress peculiarity analysis and optimization analysis, and from the angle obtained, the scarf joint is designed by confining an angle to reduce the stress concentration.
