At a transmission side, input data is divided into a first data string and a second data string for each predetermined symbol unit. According to the second data string separated, one of a plurality of orthogonal codes is selected. The first data string is spread by the selected code. The first data string which has been spread is modulated and transmitted. At a reception side, each of the received signals is despread by the same plurality of orthogonal codes as the transmission side. From the received signals which have been despread, a signal which has been despread by a correct orthogonal code is selected. The selected signal is demodulated to obtain a first reception data string. A second reception data string corresponding to the correct orthogonal code selected by the selection is obtained. The first reception data string is combined with the second reception data string so as to obtain reception data.
