PURPOSE: An image and sound recording/reproducing device capable of randomly accessing and a control method thereof are provided to record additional information on a recording target file while recording moving image/still image/sound files in a data recording area of an HDD, thereby randomly accessing data recorded on the HDD. CONSTITUTION: An input/output terminal portion(110) receives signals generated from various image signal sources, and outputs signals reproduced from an HDD(151) applied to a high-capacity recording device. A main controller(160) processes a user operation signal received through a light receiving portion(171), and controls each unit. The main controller(160) has a CPU(161) and an MPEG decoder(163) for decoding signals compressed in MPEG type. A video encoder(137) encodes video signals outputted from a video decoder(131) or the MPEG decoder(163), and outputs the encoded video signals to a switching portion(123).
