<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing diffraction element in which the yield is improved by preventing flashes from being generated in corners and in which the characteristic is constantly uniform and superior, and also to provide the manufacturing method and an optical pickup device. <P>SOLUTION: An adhesive layer 2 is formed on a transparent substrate 1 (a, b), an organic double-refracting film 3 is placed on the layer 2 and stuck on the layer 2 (c). A metallic mask pattern 6 in a periodic grating pattern is formed (d) and used to form rugged gratings on the organic double-refracting film 3 (e). An overcoating material 4 is filled, a transparent substrate 5 is placed on it (f). Lastly, the film is divided into a plurality of polarizing diffraction elements by dicing (g). The organic double-refracting film 3 used herein is one in which the corners of the polarizing diffraction element are preliminarily removed.
