<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chitosan sponge sheet capable of being used for a cosmetic and a medical material, and having more excellent physical characteristics, such as water absorption characteristics and strength, when compared with those of conventional collagen sponge sheets. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the chitosan sponge sheet having the good strength and water absorption characteristics comprises forming an aqueous acid solution of the chitosan into the chitosan sponge sheet through a freeze- and vacuum-drying process, wherein the aqueous solution of the chitosan is interposed between two pieces of freeze support members, then cooling and treating both surfaces thereof to form a frozen material, and further subjecting the frozen material to freeze- and vacuum-drying.
