<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is free from erroneous detection by an image density adjustment mechanism and outputs a high quality image. <P>SOLUTION: For a fixed length of time before an image forming operation, the image forming apparatus uses an exposure means to pre-expose an image carrier over its entire area in the direction of the length that is greater than the width of image formation.
