<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head easily applied to high-speed recording and having an improved productivity, and to provide its driving method and a thermal printer. <P>SOLUTION: The thermal head includes a plurality of heating elements R1-R256 arranged in an array, shift resistors Sa and Sb comprising shift register cells of the same bit number as those of the heating elements R1-R256, and switching elements SW1-SW256 disposed between the heating elements R1-R256 and the shift resistors Sa, Sb for controlling energization to the heating elements on the basis of image data inputted in the shift registers Sa and Sb. A plurality of the shift resistors are arranged so that a plurality of shift register cells are assigned to each of the heating elements R1-R256.
