PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting the shift gate position of a vehicle transmission capable of obtaining positional information of a shift gate with high accuracy and easily controlling the automatic transmission or the like. SOLUTION: A movable body 46 is abutted on a counter 40f to stop the movable body 46 by driving an actuator, and the shift gate reference position definition to define the stop position as the shift gate reference position PA is performed.
