PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maximum likelihood decoder and a maximum likelihood decoding method for convolution coding, which raises the decoding process speed while maintaining the decoding performance. SOLUTION: In a Viterbi decoder, a path memory 30 saves information corresponding to revival paths from a selected branch in each state, a path memory comparator 71 adjusts the information about the error quantity of the received signals, e.g., the trace back size according to the existence of a joining of paths in the past time point, and a trace back unit 33 traces back information corresponding to the revival paths in an optimum state in a path memory to output a decoded series, based on the trace back size adjusted by the comparator 71.
