PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep satisfactory an operating state of an internal combustion engine by optimally controlling the air suction temperature. SOLUTION: This controller comprises an cylinder inner pressure sensor 44 for detecting cylinder inner pressure, a combustion period calculating means for calculating a combustion period in a cylinder based on the cylinder inner pressure, and an exhaust gas recirculation device (EGR pipe 46, EGR cooler 50) for controlling suction air temperature based on the combustion period. The suction air temperature is controlled based on the combustion period, so that the combustion state in the cylinder can be always set at the optimal state, fuel consumption is improved, and knocking is suppressed.
