PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit adopting ATA/ATAPI standard, avoiding lengthening of starting caused when a host and a master do not conform in shadow response standard. SOLUTION: When a relevant drive unit 5 is connected as a master to the host 1 and a drive unit as a slave is not connected, according to the shadow response standard of ATA/ATAPI standard, the relevant drive unit performs shadow response with the host 1 to confirm the absence of the slave, stores nonconformity information that the shadow response is nonconformity when the shadow response to the host 1 is repeated above a designated number of times in a data file 17 of a memory 16, and changes the value of a slave register to be set for shadow response when nonconformity information is stored in the data file 17 in starting to another value.
