PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple device for distinguishing vibration mode of a blade of a turbine. SOLUTION: A vibration mode distinguishing device 1 is composed of a creation part 13 creating a contour map of magnitude of displacement of a moving blade, an extraction part 15 extracting characteristics of contour lines from the contour map, a database 16 storing characteristics of the contour lines of known vibration modes, an evaluation part 17 finding degree of consistency of characteristics between contour maps, and a discrimination part 18 discriminating the vibration mode based on the degree of consistency of characteristics. The contour line is divided into line segments, the line segments are categorized according to directions, and total numbers of line segments of each direction is determined as characteristics of the contour line.
