PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing both diffused transfer and graving to inconspicuous levels. SOLUTION: A device which electrostatically transfers a toner image between a transfer roller 4 as a roller member and a photoreceptor 1 on which the roller 4 is pressed, from the surface side of one of these toward the surface side of the other is provided, and has the following structure, is used as a transfer device: a roller with an elastic layer comprising an elastic material is used as the transfer roller 4, and a toner image is electrostatically transferred by passing a transfer current of 6-40 [nA/mm<SP>2</SP>] between the transfer roller 4 and the photoreceptor 1 while pressing the roller 4 on the photoreceptor 1 under a pressure of 0.01-2.0 [N/mm<SP>2</SP>].
