PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to crush, exactly and without any delay, even large and solid plastics such as an ocean float. SOLUTION: A plastics volume reducing apparatus comprises: a hopper 3 for receiving plastics P; a processing chamber 2 for crushing and compressing the plastics P moved from the hopper 3. The processing chamber 2 comprises: a crushing screw 5 equipped with a crushing arm 6 for crushing the plastics P, and screw blades 7 for sending the plastics P forward; crushing plates 8 disposed as vertical stripes separated back and forth from each other at a predetermined distance in a manner such that they do not interfere the crushing arm 6; and a tapered compression cylinder 9 surrounding the screw blades 7 at the front end of the crushing screw 5. In addition, the volume-reducing apparatus is constructed in a manner such that the crushing arm 6 is disposed only within a specific range in an axis-perimeter direction of the crushing screw 5, thereby forming in the crushing screw 5 an area which produces in one rotation a period during which un-crushed plastics P and the crushing arm 6 do not contact each other.
