PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a galactose-2,6-disulfate derivative, a galactose-3,6-disulfate derivative and a galactose-4,6-disulfate derivative which have new structures, respectively, and can be used for culturing animal cells. SOLUTION: The galactose-2,6-disulfate derivative, the galactose-3,6-disulfate derivative and the galactose-4,6-disulfate derivative each represented by formula (1) [X<SB>1</SB>is SO<SB>3</SB>H, X<SB>2</SB>is H, and X<SB>3</SB>is H; X<SB>1</SB>is H, X<SB>2</SB>is SO<SB>3</SB>H, X<SB>3</SB>is H; or X<SB>1</SB>is H, X<SB>2</SB>is H, or X<SB>3</SB>is SO<SB>3</SB>H; R is H or O(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>CH<SB>3</SB>; (m) is an integer of 2 to 6; (n) is an integer of 11 to 17]. The galactose-2,6-disulfate derivative, the galactose-3,6-disulfate derivative and the galactose-2,6-disulfate derivative have new structures, respectively, and are obtained by reacting a galactose derivative with an excessive amount of a sulfating reagent.
