PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber of which the clad has an air clad structure and the ratio of the fine hole diameter to the interval of fine holes is large. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optical fiber includes: a preform manufacturing process for manufacturing a preform 3 having a capillary bundle constituted of a plurality of capillaries 1; and a drawing process for heating and drawing the preform 3. The inner pressure of each of the plurality of capillaries 1 in the drawing process is previously controlled and both ends of each capillary are sealed so that the inner pressure of each of the plurality of capillaries 1 becomes almost atmospheric pressure.
