<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital information recording method for easily retrieving a specific pattern along the side of an information recording area at the time of reading. <P>SOLUTION: An almost rectangular information recording area 23 arranged in a plane-shaped recording face 20 is virtually set with matrix-shaped squares corresponding to bits, and optically recognizable marks(bright or dark) corresponding to digital information to be recorded are applied to each square, and the digital information to be recorded is recorded as a two-dimensional pattern. A plurality of specific patterns 22 constituted by adding the marks to those squares connected in specific shapes with a predetermined pattern for showing their positions in the recording face 20 are arranged in parallel with predetermined intervals in their line directions and column directions in the information recording area 23.
