<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and multi-pole receptacle without its contacts exposed at all time. <P>SOLUTION: An insulating socket housing 1 has an opening 11 into which a plug with a dual in-line male contact is to be inserted. A plurality of female contacts 2 are arrayed in parallel in a row so as to oppose an inner wall of the opening 11, and come in contact with the male contact when the plug is inserted. When the plug is not inserted, a shutter 3 chokes a front face of the opening 11, and when it is inserted, the shutter 3 is pressed by the plug and retreats toward an insertion direction. A helical compression spring 5 biases the shutter 3 with force to advance to the front face of the opening 11.
