<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the complicated change of the luminance of an LED by plotting representative points and connecting interpolating curves even if the luminance is changed complicatedly with respect to a time in an apparatus and a method for controlling the LED. <P>SOLUTION: A desired curve 1 is drawn by using an input unit, such as, a mouse/scanner, etc. by indicating a time t on an abscissa axis and the luminance y on an ordinate axis by using a computer system. The representative points 2 are clicked by the mouse, and all the representative points 2 are thereby plotted. Then, these representative points 2 are connected by a tertiary spline curve 3 as an interpolating curve, coefficients a<SB>ij</SB>of the respective interpolating curves are calculated, and are stored in the memory of a microcomputer of an LED controller as luminance data. A current value supplied to the LED is controlled according to the coefficient a<SB>ij</SB>read from the memory by a CPU by a current controller.
