PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of leaving electrified toner unrecovered on the surface of a latent image carrier, without bring about such an evil that the time for which a user cannot form images is made superfluously long. SOLUTION: Only reverse electrified toner T<SB>1</SB>out of untransferred toner remaining on a photoreceptor drum 1 is temporarily held on a brush roll 41. The reverse electrified toner is discharged onto the photoreceptor drum during the period other than image formation period by applying a prescribed discharge bias to the brush roll. The application time of the discharge vias is made longer according as the cumulative number of prints is increased. The discharge bias is applied to the brush roll only for a minimum time required for completely discharging the amount of reverse electrified toner to be discharged, which is increased in accordance with increase of the cumulative number of prints. Thus the application time of the discharge bias is not made superfluously long while suppressing the occurrence of leaving the electrified toner unrecovered, which occurs with time.
