PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine wherein a strong swirl can be produced by increasing an intake-air flow for swirl generation with a simple structure. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine is provided with a cylinder head 2 in which an intake port 6 having a 1st port 6<SB>1</SB>and a 2nd port 6<SB>2</SB>is formed. In a combustion chamber 5, when a 2nd intake valve 8<SB>2</SB>for opening/closing the 2nd port 6<SB>2</SB>is put in a suspension state by a valve suspension mechanism 40, a swirl S is generated by intake air let in from the 1st port 6<SB>1</SB>. In a 1st intake port 6<SB>1</SB>a, a line of intersection of a 1st plane including the 1st intake port 6<SB>1</SB>a and a 1st orthogonal plane Pb1 inclines upward as it approaches from a position close to the outside periphery of the combustion chamber 5 to a 2nd base plane Pc2. Further, the 1st port 6<SB>1</SB>has a port section 6<SB>1</SB>c of a passage shape along nearly a vertical line L3 intersecting orthogonally the 1st plane Pa1 in a plan view upstream of the 1st intake port 6<SB>1</SB>a in a prescribed length of the passage.
