The edge of the lens is pressed against a stack of circular grinding wheels (68,70,71), which may have one or more circumferential grooves (69). The lens and the grinding wheels are enclosed in a safety chamber (12) with a transparent window (14) in front. A sealing bag (21) surrounds the grinding wheel spindle (18) which is driven by a belt (20). A hopper under the grinding wheels catches grit.
