PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively remove foreign matters stuck to an image carrier and also extend the life time of a latent image carrier in an image forming device wherein a charging member is brought into contact with the latent image carrier and a DC bias voltage having an AC voltage superposed thereon is applied to the charging member to charge the latent image carrier and thus an image is formed.

SOLUTION: Three or more stages of applicable AC inter-peak voltage values are provided, and an inter-peak voltage higher than an inter-peak voltage in printing by two or more stages is applied in at least a part of pre-rotation in the case that an inter-peak voltage selected by a detection result of an AC current obtained in switching and applying inter-peak voltages is lower than a maximum applicable inter-peak voltage by two or more stages.
