Wear protection coating for use on at least one surface of a piston or piston ring, where at least one part of the layer consists of at least 50 vol.% of an oxide ceramic, where the coating is applied by high velocity flame spraying (HVOF). Independent claims are included for: (1) a piston with a wear resistant coating as described; and (2) a process for production of the coating as described above.
