In a gas sample flow upstream of a porous filter (56), a cyclone separator (28) removes coarse solid particles. The cyclone has a gas lock (38) at its lower end for the removal of solids. This is operated automatically by a controller (48). A sample extraction tube (10) includes an angled section (12), with a flange between this and the cyclone. This enables the probe tube and cyclone to be connected at an adjustable angle. The angled section is a T-piece (12). Its continuous section (14) connects in alignment with the tube (10). There is a detachable closure (20) at the extension of the probe tube. The cyclone is heated to a controlled (62) temperature.
