PURPOSE: A method for improving a data rate in a portable terminal is provided to turn off a display while a PC performs data communication through a portable terminal, thereby improving a data rate by minimizing an interrupt while reducing power consumption of the portable terminal. CONSTITUTION: A controller senses data communication(200). A display is turned on while updating a screen of the display and displaying a data communication time(201). The controller senses a certain time elapses(202), and turns off the display(203). An operation for continuously updating the screen of the display is stopped. While the display is turned off, if a key is operated by a user, the controller senses the key operation(204). The controller turns on the display again(205), and re-performs the screen updating of the display. The data communication time is displayed on the display. If the data communication is not terminated through a portable terminal, the controller senses the data communication(206), and decides whether the certain time elapses(202).
