PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic precipitator which saves electric power and can obtain high dust collection performance. SOLUTION: When a high negative dc voltage is applied from a power source 6 to the electric discharge electrodes 2 of a charged part 1, a corona discharge of negative polarity is generated between grounded electrodes 5 facing in parallel. Since the lengths of projections 3 and 4 to be the origins of the corona discharge are different from each other, the corona discharge regions are hierarchical. In the vicinity of the boundary between two discharge regions 7 generated from the longer projection 3 of the adjacent lengths, a discharge region 8 is generated from the shorter projection 4. With regard to the air flow direction, a part small in electric current density is decreased. By making the corona discharge regions hierarchical, the corona discharge regions as a whole can be generated efficiently. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
