The method involves combining the code word being tested with a second code word of the same code and forming a third code word of an error detecting code. This can be repeated using the third code word as the word being tested until the generated code word is a word of an error detecting code. The last generated word is checked with a parity code word check method. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a checker for an error detecting code (b) and arrangement with at least one chip and/or processor form implementing the inventive method (c) a code word generator (d) and an averaging circuit.
