An electronic plucked-string musical instrument which generates a sound without a significant time lag after the musical instrument is operated and has a detection mechanism that is not complicated. A body section (10) formed like a plucked-string musical instrument is provided with a photosensor (11) operated by a player for musical performance. The photosensor (11) generates a signal for generating a sound when light emitted from a light-emitting section (11a) toward a light-receiving section (11b) is not detected by the light receiving section (11b) side. The time after the musical instrument is operated until a sound is generated can be shortened because a detection signal generated by the photosensor (11) requires no conversion processing. Furthermore, the structure of the detection mechanism is not complicated because light is utilized.
