PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the detection of overlapping of manuscripts when aligning a plurality of manuscripts for reading an image. SOLUTION: A scanner is connected to a host computer. When a user selects a multi-photograph mode in a driver, preview is automatically made, preview image data are binarized, and the position and number of the manuscripts are calculated from the data. When the positions of a plurality of images are detected, the reading of the images is started. Contrarily, when the position detection result of the manuscripts is recognized as a polygon that is at least a pentagon, the manuscripts are determined to be overlapped, an error is indicated, and an advice for confirming the position of a print manuscript is given to a user.
