PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device to monitor the surrounding area of a vehicle capable of securing the design quality of the whole vehicle and preventing a photographing camera from having dust etc. or being damaged by contact of gravel etc. when it is out of service. SOLUTION: The vehicle surrounding area monitoring device has a main control part 19 which decides whether the camera 11 should emerge or retract from/to a prescribed part such as a bumper 20 of the vehicle on the basis of the signal given by a vehicle speed sensor 55 etc., and in accordance with the result from judging, an emerge/retract driving device 17 is actuated so that the camera 11 emerges or retracts from/to the prescribed part of the vehicle. When a sensor 59 has sensed any obstacle around the vehicle, the image photographed by the camera 11 is displayed on a display device 15. If not required, the camera 11 may be accommodated inside the bumper 20, which secures a good design quality and prevents it from attachment of dust etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
