A first fixed measurement transducer (2) embraces the steering spindle (1) measuring its absolute position with the aid of a code rotating with the shaft and a first signal transmitter (4). An acme thread (7) on the shaft drives a second signal transmitter (5) having a code on its periphery, along the shaft. With the aid of a second measurement transducer (3) a translatory movement of the second transmitter can be recognised. The relative movements of the two transmitters have a constant ratio to one another and from this the absolute angle is evaluated.
