PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preheater of a preform for a composite material capable of manufacturing the composite material having excellent wear resistance and vibration damping performance. SOLUTION: In this preheater, a shielded casing 16 in which a sealingly enclosed preheat space 17 is formed is disposed in a preheating furnace 12, a heating element 14 is disposed between the inner wall 35 of the preheating furnace 12 and the shielded casing 16, and a preform 2 for composite material disposed in the enclosed preheat space 17 is heated by allowing heat emitted from the heating element 14 to be transmitted thereto through the shielded casing. By this, graphite 6 and activated charcoal can be prevented from being oxidized and burned out by preheating, and the composite material 1 formed by impregnating a melted metal 4 of light metal into the preform 2a for the composite material can develop the excellent wear resistance and vibration damping performance.
