PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure that a target engine torque becomes an engine torque at a fully closed throttle when an accelerator is fully released while securing the degree of freedom in setting the target engine torque. SOLUTION: The controller calculates an arbitrary first target engine torque (performance request torque) for controlling throttle travel in response to accelerator travel. It further calculates a second target engine torque (engine performance torque) for controlling the throttle travel such that the throttle travel varies proportionately with the accelerator travel. When the accelerator travel is equal to or larger than a predetermined threshold value, the first target engine torque is made a final target engine torque. When the accelerator travel is less than the threshold value, the controller obtains the final target engine torque by subjecting the first target engine torque and second target engine torque to proportional distribution according to the ratio of the accelerator travel to the threshold value.
