3,4-Alkylene dioxythiophenes substituted with a mesogenic group (optionally via a linking group) are new, not including 3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene substituted in the ethylenedioxy bridge with a 4'-cyano-biphenyloxy-hexyloxymethyl group. Independent claims are also included for (1) polythiophenes with repeating units of formula (IV), not including those with units of formula (ii); (2) methods for the production of polythiophenes by the electrochemical or chemical oxidative polymerization of the corresponding thiophene compounds (I); and (3) polythiophenes obtained by this method. A = 1-5C alkylene, optionally with a linker L at any point and optionally with other substituents; L = methylene; p = 0 or 1-6; M = an n-functional mesogenic group; n = 1-8; B1 = linking group of formula -(CO)q-(Sp)m-(CO)r-(Q)t-(CO)s-; q, t, m = 0 or 1; r, s = 0 or 1, with the proviso that s is 0 when r is 1 and vice versa, or both are zero; Sp = a spacer selected from optionally substituted linear or cyclic 1-20C alkylene, 5-20C arylene, 2-20C heteroarylene (optionally with 1-3 other N, O or S atoms in the heteroaromatic ring), 6-20C aralkylene, or a 2-200C oligo- or poly-ether group; and Q = O, S or NH. |
