PURPOSE: A method and a system for interconverting map data having a format different with each other are provided to reduce time and expense by offering a convenient and efficient data exchange function to interchange data description methods different with each other. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a spatial data storage(11), an attribute data storage(12), a ROM(13), a preprocessor(14), a post-processor(15), an operation processor(16), a RAM(17), a video memory(18), a screen display(19), and an output part(20). The ROM stores a data format conversion method based on a GIS(Geographic Information System) as an application program. The operation processor stores the spatial data read from the spatial data storage and the attribute data read from the attribute data storage to the RAM, performs various kinds of operations and controls, and is connected to the video memory, the preprocessor, and the post-processor.
