PURPOSE: An antioxidant and a pharmaceutical composition which contain an Allium tuberosum Rottler extract as an effective ingredient are provided. The extract exhibits antioxidative activity and oxidative stress scavenging activity while having no toxicity and adverse effects. Therefore, the extract can be used as an antioxidant or a pharmaceutical composition for prevention of diseases caused by oxidative stress. CONSTITUTION: The antioxidant and pharmaceutical composition contain: a crude extract of Allium tuberosum Rottler which is extracted in lower alcohol such as water, ethanol and methanol, or a mixed solvent thereof, and its solvent extract which is soluble in a nonpolar solvent or a polar solvent; and additionally carriers, excipients and diluents. The nonpolar solvent is selected from hexane, chloroform, dichloromethane or ethyl acetate, the polar solvent is selected from acetone, butanol, ethanol, methanol or water. The recommended dosage of the extract ranges from 0.1 to 100mg/kg/day. A health beverage contains 0.02 to 10g of the extract on the basis of 100ml of beverage.
