PURPOSE: A zinc oxide-based sintered body, its preparation method and a zinc oxide varistor are provided, to obtain an antimony oxide-free zinc oxide-based sintered body having excellent electrical properties. CONSTITUTION: The zinc oxide-based sintered body is prepared by mixing chromium oxide with at least one selected from the group consisting of bismuth oxide, boron oxide, silicon oxide and oxides of rare earth elements and heating the mixture to obtain a chromium oxide composite powder; and mixing 0.05-5.0 parts by weight of the chromium oxide composite powder, 0.1-5.0 parts by weight of tin oxide, 0.05-5.0 parts by weight of at least one oxide selected from the group consisting of oxide silicon and oxides of rare earth elements, and 0.5-7.0 parts by weight of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of bismuth oxide, cobalt oxide, manganese oxide, nickel oxide, boron oxide, boric acid and aluminum salts based on 100 parts by weight of zinc oxide, molding the mixture, sintering the molded one at 750-980 deg.C, and cooling the sintered one.
