PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to prevent grating pattern by not performing the frame rate modulation(FRM) when the image data is a full gray level. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus and a method for driving a liquid crystal display device includes a scaler, a signal controller and a dat driving unit. The scaler is provided with a detection unit(750), a frame rate modulation(FRM) unit(790) and a FRM control unit. The detection unit(750) generates a corresponding signal by determining whether the image data is a full gray level or not. The FRM unit(790) performs the FRM to the image data. And, the FRM control unit controls the operation of the FRM unit(790) in response to the signal from the detection unit(750).
