Method for extracting sulfur dioxide (I), optionally also carbon dioxide (II), from smoke produced by burning hydrocarbons comprises cooling the smoke, at about atmospheric pressure, so that (I) and optionally (II) pass directly from the vapor state to the solid state, by an 'anti-sublimation' process. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) similar method for removing (I), and optionally (II), from methane, particularly extracted from natural deposits; and (2) system for the new process that includes a device for cooling the smoke or methane.
