The invention relates to thermal engines. The aim of said invention is to simplify the structural design of an internal combustion engine using a waste gas prolonged expansion cycle and to increase the efficiency factor thereof. The aim is achieved by that said prolonged expansion is carried out by connecting a main cylinder (1) and a combustion chamber (2) to the expansion chamber of a piston compressor (12), thereby increasing the cumulative volume of the combustion chamber, main cylinder (1) and the expansion chamber of a piston compressor (12) during the motion of main cylinder piston (3) from the lower dead centre to the upper dead centre thereof. Simultaneously, air or a fuel/air mixture is compressed in the compression chamber of the piston compressor. When the cumulative volume of the combustion chamber, main cylinder and the expansion chamber attains the maximum value thereof, the air or the fuel/air mixture which are pre-compressed to combustion parameters in the compression chamber of the piston compressor is by-passed in the combustion chamber, the expansion chamber (12) and the compression chamber (15) of the piston compressor are disconnected from the combustion chamber (9) and a working stroke is carried out in the main cylinder. During said working motion, the expansion chamber is connected to an exhaust unit (13), the compression chamber (15) is connected to the air or fuel/air mixture supply unit and the air or fuel/air intake is carried out.
