The device has a tubular net with deformable meshes, and a sliding structure with two mobile units (12, 14) approaching or moving away with one another. Each unit is connected to one of the ends of the net to compress or to stretch the net. Actuators (111) are provided to make the mobile units to approach or move away with one another. Mobile carriers are driven back and forth to support the net and the sliding structure. An independent claim is also included for a process of handling a lengthened object.
