PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make obtainable a brighter projected image. SOLUTION: In the projection type display device, the illuminator 11 emitting illuminating light is constituted so that NA may be larger in a 1st direction than in a 2nd direction between the 1st and the 2nd directions being two respective perpendicular directions on a plane perpendicular to a principal optical axis of emitted light emitted from its own emitting surface. A DMD (digital micro millor) (R) 13 being an optical modulation element is constituted so as to optically modulate the incident light to have NA larger in direction Y than in direction X between the directions X and Y being two perpendicular directions on the plane perpendicular to the principal optical axis of the incident light made incident on its own incident surface, and the illuminator 11 is arranged so that the 2nd direction may correspond to the direction X of the DMD (R) 13.
