Cooling segments(3) are located on the outside of the cylinder jacket(2) and are combined to form a complete cooling ring. Each cooling segment comprises a base which sits on the cylinder jacket and cooling ribs which extend outwards. Channels between cooling ribs carry fluid coolant. Both the base and the cooling ribs are of metal and at least 80% of the base volume is made from this metal. A single cooling segment extends over not >10% of a cylinder jacket circumference. Cooling segments are connected together to form a flexible chain-like cooling ring(4). Connectors(5) pass through spaces between cooling ribs. Cooling ribs and cooling channels run circumferentially around the cylinder jacket and in adjacent elements are aligned with each other. A cooling housing(17), through which air flows, surrounds the cooling segment ring on the cylinder jacket. Heating rings may also be arranged along the cylinder length.
