Electrochemical production of aluminum hydroxide, e.g. for ceramic, refractory, aluminum or chemical production, uses alkaline aluminate liquor feeds of different concentration and pH to cell divided by cation exchange membrane

In electrochemical production of aluminum hydroxide (I) from alkaline aluminate liquors (II) of different concentration and pH, (II) are introduced into cell with 2 (preferably graphite) electrodes, separated by cation exchange membrane, at 4-16 V applied direct potential. Excess alkali hydroxide solution (III) is neutralized then (I) is precipitated, whilst more (III) is formed.
