PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-modified vegetable fiber body excellent in resistance to yellowing and a moisture-conditioning property. SOLUTION: In the surface-modified vegetable fiber body, the surface of the vegetable fiber body is treated with a calcium phosphate composition represented by the composition formula 1: Ca<SB>a</SB>X<SB>b</SB>(PO<SB>4</SB>)<SB>c</SB>Y<SB>d</SB>-eH<SB>2</SB>O [wherein X is a metal ion having (p) valence ((p) is 2 or 3); Y is an anion having (q) valence ((q) is 1, 2 or 3); (a), (b), (c) and (d) are each a real number satisfying the formula: 2a+p×b-3c-q×d=0 (wherein (a) and (c) are each a positive real number and (b) and (d) are each 0 or a positive real number); (e) is a real number of≥0].
