PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubbing device for a substrate of a liquid crystal display device capable of decreasing an alignment abnormality region caused by insufficient alignment treatment and preventing occurrence of failure such as defective display in the liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The rubbing material is used for the substrate of the liquid crystal display device provided with an alignment layer formed on an insulating substrate so as to align a liquid crystal. The rubbing material consists of a base cloth 9 and piles 8a having a rugged top end profile. The alignment treatment of an alignment film is more effectively carried out by preparing the top section of the piles 8a into a ruged profile. Thus, it is possible to suppress defective alignment or shorten a period of time for alignment treatment more than heretofore. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
