PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for sulfonation in a batch system, efficiently absorbing a sulfonation gas without flooding, dispersing the gas and carrying out a stable external circulation without cavitation, even in a system having≥0.05 m/s superficial velocity of the gas. SOLUTION: In the sulfonation method in which a raw material liquid phase is brought into contact with the sulfonation gas using the batch system agitation-mixing type reactor having an agitator, the sulfonation method is to carry out the sulfonation by bringing the position of an agitation blade of the agitator to be 0.20H-0.80H, wherein H expresses the height of the surface of the raw material liquid by bringing the height of reactor bottom to be 0, and a space in the height direction between the agitation blade and a gas inlet nozzle for introducing the sulfonation gas into the reactor to be≤0.15H. The subject method for producing anα-sulfo fatty acid alkyl ester and a salt of the same is to use a sulfonation product obtained by sulfonating an fatty acid alkyl ester by using this method.
