<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device switching the recording mode in accordance with the kind of a tape and performing recording and reproducing of an input digital signal. <P>SOLUTION: This device is provided with a first recording mode for discriminating a tape at the time of recording a digital signal and driving a magnetic tape being excellent in a standard electric property with a reference first running speed, and a second recording mode for driving a magnetic tape being inferior in electric property with a second running speed being (n) times of the first running speed and performing digital recording using rotary heads of the number of pieces of (n) times of the first recording mode with a recording rate of 1/n of the first recording mode.
