PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic analyzer for preventing immaterial suction to a specimen accommodated in a sample container, especially a specimen whose amount of suction is small, in advance, and to provide a method for sucking the specimen. SOLUTION: A sampling probe 16, where a liquid level detection sensor for detecting the liquid level of the specimen in a sample container 17 and a bottom section detection sensor 19 for detecting the bottom section of the sample container 17 are installed, is accommodated in the sample container 19. The height of the liquid level of the specimen accommodated in the sample container 17 is specified. Table data, where the relationship between the amount of specimen accommodated in the sample container 17 and the height from the bottom section is stored in advance, are referred to. The calculated value is compared with the specified height of the liquid level of the sample to judge whether the specimen is sucked by calculating the liquid level of the specimen from the bottom section for preventing empty suction to the amount of specimen to be sucked.
